The Sabbath Day in the Bible
The Sabbath is a core element of Christianity. We can see in the Bible that God established it as the day of worship. He made it the fourth of the Ten Commandments so that His people would remember to always observe it.
“‘Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
...but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God.’”
Exodus 20:8–10 (NLT)
“‘By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so, on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.’”
On the seventh day, God rested. He also blessed the day and made it holy for His people. This is because it is on the seventh-day Sabbath that our spirit can rest, be blessed, and become holy. So, we should have conviction regarding the specific day of the week God designated as the Sabbath.
Which day of the week is the Sabbath?
Both the calendar and the dictionary indicate that Saturday is the seventh day of the week. And the Bible clearly emphasizes the same thing in the book of Mark.
“When the Sabbath was over …When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week”
“Saturday evening, when the Sabbath ended … After Jesus rose from the dead early on Sunday morning...”
Many Christians know that Jesus resurrected on Sunday morning. The Bible describes the day that Jesus resurrected as the first day of the week. And it also describes that the day before Jesus resurrected was the Sabbath, or Saturday. So, the Bible explains that the biblical Sabbath is Saturday.
The World Mission Society Church of God keeps the seventh-day Sabbath holy, just as Jesus and the disciples did, to receive God’s promises of rest and blessings.
