On one of the hottest days of the summer, middle and high school students from ASEZ STAR came together to clean up Soundview Park. Known as the “Gateway to the Bronx River,” this large public park is an important recreational space and a vital part of the local environment. Yet, like many urban green spaces, it often suffers from pollution and neglect.
Despite the intense heat, the students worked in teams to collect litter from pathways, grassy fields, and the park’s shoreline. Their efforts supported the ASEZ STAR Green World Campaign, which empowers young students to take the lead in protecting their communities through environmental service.
Youth Leading Environmental Responsibility
The cleanup also aligned with the Don’t Dump on the Bronx campaign, encouraging residents and visitors to care for shared spaces. The students’ work helped beautify Soundview Park, promote health and cleanliness, and remind others that caring for the environment starts with small, consistent actions.
Melany Rodriguez, a high school student volunteer, shared, “During cleanups, I’ve learned patience, endurance, and how powerful unity really is. When everyone shows up and works together, it makes even the hardest parts—like picking up trash in the heat—feel fun and meaningful.”
Inspiring the Community and Local Leaders
The courage and teamwork shown by the students didn’t go unnoticed. Community members passing by thanked the volunteers and expressed how encouraging it was to see young people serving their neighborhood. City representatives also emphasized the importance of involving youth in environmental efforts that directly benefit the spaces they use every day. Through dedication and teamwork, ASEZ STAR students are helping to keep the Bronx green—one park at a time.
