ASEZ STAR Mural Painting at South Middle School in Newburgh

On August 28, 2025, about a dozen ASEZ STAR students, along with their parents and other volunteers, painted a mural at South Middle School in Newburgh, NY. The mural featured the school mascot, a fictional bird-of-prey called a Goldback, a tree symbolizing growth, and the motivational phrase: “You are soaring to great heights, headed for success. Stay on that path, don’t settle for less.” This creative project transformed a dark basement hallway into a bright and encouraging pathway for students traveling between classes.

Through their artwork, the volunteers aimed to inspire peace, kindness, hope, and camaraderie among the students. The mural also gave local students, who face challenging environments, a chance to see positivity and motivation every day. The project encouraged them to rise above obstacles, work together, and improve their school and community.

The City of Newburgh Mayor Torrence Harvey presented a Certificate of Recognition to ASEZ STAR. The certificate praised the young leaders for their dedication, leadership, and compassion. It highlighted how these volunteers reflect values of faith, service, and unity, giving time and talent to help others. The recognition cited the volunteers’ ability to inspire the community to step up, work together, and create a stronger, more caring environment. As the certificate noted, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.” Mark 10:4-5.
