On June 19, 2025, ASEZ university student volunteers from the Bronx came together to clean Cedar Avenue. Located next to the Major Deegan Expressway, Cedar Avenue faces ongoing problems with litter and illegal dumping. They removed 30 bags of trash, a large metal shelf, and tree debris, making the area cleaner and safer.

Support from the Community and Volunteers
Because of its location near a busy highway, volunteers received plenty of encouragement from passing drivers. Many honked, waved, and even rolled down their windows to shout “Thank you!” The heat and humidity made the work challenging, but the volunteers’ dedication lifted the neighborhood’s spirit and gave hope to local residents.
Aurora Whyte, president of the Lehman College ASEZ club, reflected on the experience, saying, “ASEZ is a great organization to be part of as a college student. I love the sense of community, and I’m so happy to take part in these cleanup events.”
Reducing Crime Through Community Action
This cleanup was part of ASEZ’s Reduce Crime Together campaign, which recognizes that neglected areas can lead to increased criminal activity. By clearing sidewalks, curbs, and corners, volunteers helped make the neighborhood more welcoming and walkable. The event also focused on engaging students in service that supports crime reduction and encourages youth-led action.
