Church of God Cleanup at Maria Hernandez Park in Brooklyn, NY

On December 15, 50 volunteers from the Church of God, along with Assemblymember Maritza Davila, cleaned up Maria Hernandez Park. The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation joined to support the park’s maintenance and continued care. The volunteers helped maintain this green space, ensuring it stays safe and accessible for the people of Brooklyn. As a result, they removed 61 bags of trash, including organic materials that will be composted for future use.

Maria Hernandez Park is an important part of the Bushwick neighborhood. People from all walks of life visit the park every day for activities like dog walking, picnics, and family gatherings. On any given day, you can see “street vendors, people dancing and playing soccer; it’s a really beautiful thing,” said Adam Blachly of Partnership for Parks. Thanks to the hard work of the volunteers, the park now looks even better.

Assemblymember Awards Church of God for Volunteerism

Assemblymember Maritza Davila showed her appreciation by presenting the Church of God with a citation. The award recognizes the Church’s “commitment to communities around the world” in honor of its 60th anniversary. Assemblymember Davila also expressed, “I grew up in this community, and my son and my grandchildren have utilized this park, so I came here to say thank you to all of you.”

Volunteer Tonisha Kerr shared her experience in the cleanup. She expressed, “Today was about focusing on others, and all the volunteers who came out did just that. We were able to remove a significant amount of debris and create a safer environment for the families who visit this park each day.”
